When I started to write about this style of portraiture, I debated on what to call them. Classic? Traditional? Heirlooms? Truly, they could be called anything, couldn’t they? This style has been around for years and years, but so loved by many mamas. From the perspective of a Dallas children’s photographer, they are classic children’s portraits that will be a true treasure for many, many years.
The first thing that comes to my mind when I see these vignette portraits is the sweet innocence of childhood! The children are just so full of joy, aren’t they? They are just kids, laughing at my silly jokes, without a care in the world for anything else!
Color Or Black and White?
This is a completely personal decision, especially if you will be framing or displaying your portraits. Traditionally, children’s portraits were in black and white, so I just love the heirloom look of black and white. However, these are of course photographed in color! I can customize your portraits to your preference! We can do color, just black and white, or both!
What to Wear
SMOCKS! All the smocks! If you’ve been waiting for the perfect opportunity to pull out that classic Feltman Brothers outfit, this is it! It would be best to choose white or a very light pastel for your child, like pink or blue. If Feltman Brothers and smocking isn’t your jam, I love this little white dress from Nordstrom because it is so simple and classic.
Truly Classic Artwork
Okay, we know that I love all the things light and airy, but these take it to a whole new level of STUNNING! The vignette in these children’s pictures makes them so gorgeous in a frame! I know that most mamas already have a place on their walls in mind when they specifically ask for this style of artwork. After your session, be sure to reach out if you need help printing or designing your framing. I work with a framer who can even create a matted circle print in a square frame! Imagine those compliments you’ll get!
