Which Session is Best for You? | Newborn Photographer in Dallas

If it’s not crystal clear by now, y’all, I’ll just say it one more time. I LOVE newborn photography. When my first was born, and I was looking for a newborn photographer in Dallas, I honestly had such a hard time finding exactly what I wanted. I wasn’t sure if I preferred the studio or lifestyle (in-home) type of newborn photography.  So, I actually booked ALL of the things. (That also began a photography obsession of him and led to this business!)

When I first started this photography business, I decided to be a little bit different.  It was important to me to offer ALL of the newborn photography styles. Subsequently, I now offer births, fresh 48s, in home lifestyle sessions, and studio newborn portraits.  I have worked very hard to make sure that any session with me is easy going and stress free, so that the hardest decision that you have to make is which session(s) you’d like to have for your growing family. After that, I take care of every detail for you! Here is a comparison of my studio and in-home, lifestyle portrait sessions.

Studio Newborn Photography

A studio newborn session is simply a newborn session at my all-white portrait studio celebrating the beauty of your new family. There are many benefits to a session at my studio, but the MAJOR one– you don’t have to worry about a clean house! Seriously y’all, by kiddo number 3, I didn’t even consider an in home session! Toddlers and their toys….need I say more!?

Seriously though, the best part of a studio session is that I have the entire studio set up for stress-free success. Beautiful lighting, soft white noise, and warmth keep your baby happy for their entire session. The studio is the “easy” option. I have everything there that you need like my wardrobe for your whole family, props, headbands, wraps, blankets, and even a bathroom stocked full of things only a new mama needs. Studio portraits are always simple, white, and clean with an abundance of beautiful, natural light from my large windows. (Learn more about my studio here!)

My studio sessions include the entire family as well as individual portraits of your newborn. However, studio portraits are different from in-home sessions because of the naked beanbag poses that everyone loves. In my studio, I use a posing beanbag covered with several white blankets. Your baby will be sound asleep from the cozy warmth and white noise that I use for this portion of your session with me. Take a little peek at what that looks like behind the scenes here. Studio sessions are also my only session that includes my baskets and props.

A Studio Newborn Session is perfect for you if….

  • An easy going and stress free environment that was created specifically with your baby in mind, appeals to you.
  • Your family prefers very light and bright portraits.
  • You love the naked & wrapped poses.
  • You’d like the opportunity to look through the products that are available to you after your session.

In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Photography

Disclaimer: I use the words in-home and lifestyle interchangeably.

I feel like the ‘definition’ of an-home session can vary widely among photographers. My lifestyle sessions are very simple. They are all about the joy of bringing home a brand new baby and celebrating such a special time. I try to really focus on your capturing the beauty and joy of being new parents, while also showcasing your home and freshly decorated nursery. (Secretly, I LOVE seeing all of your nurseries!)

Your in-home session includes your whole family as well as individual newborn portraits, just like a studio session. I can bring my wraps and a couple wardrobe pieces to you. However, the major difference is where and how the individual newborn portraits happen. Most of your precious baby’s individual portraits will be taken in their bassinet or crib. I know that most newborns are happiest when they are wrapped, so I usually wrap them up for this part of your session.  I highly recommend a Feltman Brothers outfit for the family and sibling portraits.   If you have a Moses basket, those are perfect for your session as well.

An in-home newborn Session is perfect for you if….

  • Portraits in their nursery are important to you.
  • You love your decor in your home and nursery (and want that memory preserved).
  • Your home and nursery is full of beautiful natural lighting. (Pro tip: Turn off your indoor lights and open your blinds. How does the room look?) Do you have large windows that let in a lot of light (unblocked by trees, fences, or patio covers?)
  • You want to embrace more family portraits and natural newborn portraits using items in their nursery, over the squishy beanbag poses.
